SAINT-GILLES, THE COSMOPOLITAN

Saint-Gilles is a very popular cosmopolitan commune where beautiful bourgeois houses in eclectic or Art Nouveau style still exist. The Gare du Midi district is popular and famous for its large market with oriental aromas, but it is changing to become a business district. The Gare du Midi, which is home to the Eurostar and Thalys trains, metro and tram stations and bus stops make Saint-Gilles a well-served area by public transport.

The Chaussée de Charleroi has chic shops near the famous Avenue Louise. Small shops line the very long Chaussée d'Alsemberg and further down, the nearby Barrière de Saint-Gilles is not to be outdone. The 6 weekly open-air markets on the Parvis de St Gilles are not to be missed. Places not to be missed, often off the beaten track: the Horta Museum (located in the house of the famous Art Nouveau architect), the Jacques Franck Cultural Centre, the House of Books, the Pelgrims House, the Paulus Park, but also, on the local side, the chip shop at the Barrière de Saint-Gilles or a Sunday brunch at the Tricoterie (mentioned in this guide).

The housing market in St. Gallen offers houses at prices comparable to those in Brussels city and flats that are close to the cost of those in Forest. You will find fairly expensive rental flats.
