Mobile phone

There are four main mobile operators in Belgium: Proximus, Base, Mobistar and Telenet. Each offers a range of services and packages. However, it is advisable to compare rates and conditions carefully before choosing an operator. Other providers buy from one of the three operators and resell their services. You will always find a Proximus, Mobistar or BASE outlet in your vicinity. To obtain a number, go to the point of sale of your choice with :

  • An identity document
  • Proof of address (electricity bill, lease, bank statement, etc.)
  • Your bank account number and IBAN code
  • You can take out a monthly subscription or a pre-paid card system.

In addition to the traditional operators, Carrefour, Colruyt, Aldi, bPost, Mobile Viking and many others offer pre-paid cards. You'll find them in supermarkets, newsagents and post offices.

From now on, operators will be obliged to link each SIM card in the country to an identity.

Roaming charges, or "roamingwill hopefully be abolished from 15 June 2017. These are all the extra charges for calling, texting or using mobile internet abroad within the EU, on phones or tablets. In the meantime, there are packages that allow you to use your phone abroad at "reduced" prices, depending on the operator.
