1070 Anderlecht

Anderlecht is the third largest municipality in the Brussels region after Brussels City and Uccle. Located at the western end of the city, it is crossed from north to south by the motorway ring road, thus isolating two semi-rural districts: Neerpede (where the training complex of one of the major Belgian football teams is located, and the domain of the Royale Amicale Anderlecht Golf Club, the only golf course in the region) and Vogelzang. 

In the 11th century, Anderlecht developed around the Place de la Vaillance and the Collegiate Church of Saints-Pierre-et-Guidon. This historic centre is surrounded by two buildings that cannot be ignored: the house of Erasmus (humanist philosopher who lived there in 1521) and the beguinage. The mixed settlement of the municipality can be explained by the varied history of the former hamlets that joined the historic centre on either side of the Mons road: from Cureghem with its industrial past (following the development of the Brussels-Charleroi canal from 1827 onwards) to Pajottenland and its agricultural character (farms, mills, etc.).
